“Photographer Martin San Diego snapped this shot during a reporting trip in October 2020. Martin and I profiled a missionary pilot who was moving stranded non-covid patients from rural areas amid quarantine travel restrictions. After seven months in lockdown, it was a breath of fresh air to cover some good news — a momentary break from the grim news cycle and sad stories involving the coronavirus. The pandemic exposed the inaccessibility of basic services — like health and transportation — to those on the far-flung corners of society, but this story was a reminder that in times of crisis, there are always people who try to help.
