Jason Gutierrez of the New York Times walks over still-steaming ash that had covered homes in Tagaytay Volcano island in January, 2020.

Along with NYT photographer, Jes Azanar, Gutierrez accompanied island residents who went back to the island hoping  to salvage whatever remained of their former lives before the volcano roared to life and spewed superheated ash that blackened the surroundings, including areas as far as metro Manila.

Thousands were displaced, as the volcano continued to rumble for weeks.
