“What a year of disasters 2018 was. I started coverage with floods in Japan in July, back there after an earthquake struck Hokkaido in September, then straight back to the Philippines for a typhoon and landslides.
But the clincher was the tsunami that almost decimated the city of Palu in Indonesia. For days, while I reported live in front of a mall, there was a search and rescue effort, and you could actually smell the stench of death.
Entire villages were swallowed by liquefied ground, and people were in utter despair and fear, all of which were very reminiscent of the Philippines’ own Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.”
