US-based photojournalist Rosem Morton, broadcast journalist Christian Esguerra in FOCAP Journalism Lecture on Oct. 15

It would be an understatement to say that the last couple of years have been challenging for journalists. Around the world, the coronavirus pandemic has upended daily lives and has made it difficult for journalists to capture the entirety of the crisis. Democracies have also come under attack – in the Philippines, the biggest media network was forced to shut down.

Despite the obstacles, however, journalists continue to brave treacherous grounds in order to keep reporting realities on the ground. Our guest lecturers on October 15 are testaments to this commitment. They will speak and take questions from 9am to 1pm Manila time.

Named after one of FOCAP’s founding members, the late Agence France Presse bureau chief and former press secretary Teddy Benigno, the lecture will be done entirely online due to the COVID-19 outbreaks.

Our first speaker is Rosem Morton, a Filipina photographer and nurse based in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a National Geographic Explorer, an International Women’s Media Foundation Fellow and a We, Women Photo Artist. Her storytelling focuses on everyday life amidst gender, health, and racial adversity. Her work has been recognized by the Pictures of the Year International, the World Press Photo 6×6 Global Talent and Visa pour I’image.

Morton will be followed at 11am by a talk by Christian Esguerra, host of ABS-CBN News Channel’s “After the Fact and his own podcast, “Facts First.” Esguerra has become known for his incisive, no-nonsense, and no holds barred interviews. received the Award of Distinction from the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) and the Titus Brandsma Award for Emergent Leadership in Journalism in 2019, and was named Marshall McLuhan Fellow in 2020.

The journalism lecture has become a much-awaited tradition for practicing journalists to share their insights and diverse field experiences and the latest media industry trends to journalists and students and faculty members of journalism schools nationwide.

The lectures are free but prior registration is a must through this link:
